Providing High Availability in Very Large Workkow Management Systems 1

چکیده
Work ow management systems (WFMS) support the modeling, coordinated execution and monitoring of business processes within an organization. In particular, very large work ow management systems are used in organizations with several thousand users, hundreds of thousands of process instances, and several thousand sites, all distributed over wide geographic areas. In these environments, failure of the WFMS or the underlying work ow database which stores the meta-information about the processes is not tolerable. This paper addresses the problem of providing high availability in work ow management systems by proposing a backup technique which ensures that execution of a process instance can be resumed at any point in time in the event of a failure. An essential characteristic of our backup scheme is that it allows the user to de ne di erent availability levels, reducing the cost of maintaining backups. The backup scheme is implemented using the work ow semantics, which we believe will (i) make it independent of the underlying work ow database, thus permitting the use of heterogeneous databases as primary and backup, (ii) reduce overheads, especially when compared to backup schemes provided by database systems.

Workkow management is a ubiquitous task faced by many organizations, and entails the coordination of various activities. This coordination is increasingly carried out by software systems called workkow management systems (WFMS). An important component of many WFMSs is a DBMS for keeping track of workkow activity. This DBMS maintains an audit trail, or event history, that records the results of ...

Transactional workkows have been previously speciied using commercially-available workkow management systems (WFMSs). WFMSs have facilitated this speciication by providing task coordination and execution capabilities. However, these WFMSs presently have limitations in terms of heterogeneous distributed system integration, non-proprietary cross-platform support, exible ACID property support, and...

Workkow management systems (WFMSs) are nding wide applicability in small and large organizational settings. Advanced transaction models (ATMs) focus on maintaining data consistency and have provided solutions to many problems such as correctness, consistency, and reliability in transaction processing and database management environments. متن کاملDistributed Data Management in Workkow Environments
Most existing workkow management systems (WFMSs) are based on a client/server architecture. This architecture simpliies the overall design but it does not match the distributed nature of workkow applications and it imposes severe limitations in terms of scalability and reliability. Moreover, workkow engines are not very sophisticated in terms of data management, forgetting the fact that workkow...
